Driving Innovation in Mediterranean Pastoralism
At the heart of the SUREPASTOR project are 10 pilot farms located across five Mediterranean countries. These farms serve as real-life testing grounds for innovative practices that aim to strengthen the sustainability, resilience, and productivity of agro-pastoral systems, with a particular focus on traditional sheep farming and rangeland management.
Through these farms, SUREPASTOR is bridging local knowledge and traditions with cutting-edge innovations, including:
- Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) technologies, such as GPS collars and electronic ear tags equipped with accelerometers to track rumination and other health indicators.
- Improved agronomic and zootechnical practices to sustain pasture quality and animal productivity while reducing environmental impact.
- Value-added strategies to enhance the quality and market appeal of sheep-derived products, contributing to healthier food systems.
