Experimental Virtual Fencing Trials Completed at Coveri Farm

This spring, the project team from DAGRI (UNIFI) carried out two experimental trials at Coveri Farm (Torrita di Siena, Tuscany) to test Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) technologies for grazing dairy sheep.

In March 2026, a preliminary validation study assessed the accuracy of neck-mounted accelerometers in monitoring animal behaviour, particularly rumination. Five sheep from two different breeds were observed over two days, with visual observations and video recordings used to validate the sensor data.

In April 2026, a 15-day field trial evaluated the use of Virtual Fencing (VF) technology for grazing management. Sixty lactating ewes, equipped with VF collars and accelerometers, grazed in two pastures where virtual boundaries were regularly moved to assess the animals’ ability to adapt to the system.

Throughout the trial, researchers collected data on collar acoustic and electrical signals, grazing behaviour, activity patterns, milk yield, and cortisol levels to evaluate both the effectiveness of the technology and its potential effects on animal welfare and productivity.

The results will contribute to the development of innovative, welfare-friendly solutions for precision grazing management in dairy sheep farming.
